Your Health and the Shed
We are very proud of the role we have played in helping to support people in the community back to full health through occupational therapy, with some people even going on to become full members of the shed after their treatment has ended.
Self Assessment
Whilst we do our very best to facilitate everyone who wishes to join the shed, there are some limitations to what can be done safely in a workshop environment. Some of the equipment that we have can be dangerous to use. Please keep in mind that we are a group of individuals that are keen to support others but we are not carers and we are not able to provide care for people that need a significant level of support. We hope that you can appreciate our position on this sensitive issue.
In order to help determine if the shed is suitable for you, please consider the following self-assessment checklist.
Workshop Suitability Self-Assessment
Area | Requirements |
---|---|
Physical Mobility |
Can can move around a workshop environment that includes steps, ramps and uneven surfaces safely without assistance from another person. This may include the use of support devices e.g walking sticks? |
Manual Dexterity |
Do you have the manual dexterity to carry out basic tasks, for example can you safely make hot drinks for yourself or others. Can you use and hold heavy tools and equipment safely without losing control of them or regularly dropping them? |
Mental Capacity |
Are you capable of simple problem solving. For example could you identify the individual components of a bird box and work out how they fit together? |
Memory |
Can you generally remember where things are without repeatedly having to be reminded? |
Social Skills |
Can you act in a polite manner within a group environment, controlling anger and recognising humour? |
If you can answer yes to these questions, then the shed is likely to be a good fit for you.
Professional Health Referrals
We are happy to consider professional health referrals from qualified care professionals. As a professional you will need to supply a individual risk assessment for the person you wish to refer. The assessment must take the questions shown in Workshop Suitability Self Assessment above into consideration. Details of any other issues that may impact upon the health and safety of person being referred and / or other shed members must also be contained within the assessment.
Supported Membership
On occasion, some members have been referred to the shed with a professional carer in attendance. This may be worth consideration as a risk mitigation method within your individual risk assessment. Please contact us to start the professional referral process.
Data Protection
Information contained within individual risk assessments will be shared with Shed Supervisor and the Shed Management Team who share responsibility for safety of Shedders. Information will only be shared where it is necessary to protect the safety of shed users.
Appeals
Appeals against decisions on professional referrals will be decided by the Shed Management Team.
Reviews
The Shed Management Team reserves the right to review memberships at any time.
